Lions ready to start fresh after victory

Collegian Staff Writer

Penn State men's basketball guard David 'Mooch' Jackson isn't ready for his college career to end.

The senior told his Nittany Lion teammates before Wednesday's game against Iowa that even after all of their strife during the past two months, they could still pull off some upsets and make history.

"I told the team before the game that a team has never done it, when they're 1-13 going into the Big Ten tournament and win the whole thing," Jackson said. "We've got momentum now, and the sky is the limit."

Following its 74-72 victory over the Hawkeyes, Penn State (11-17, 2-13 Big Ten) finally has a positive foundation to build upon. But before the Lions can, as Jackson said, "make some noise," in the Big Ten tournament, they need to take care of business in their season finale on the road at 8 tomorrow night at Indiana (19-9, 9-6).

However, for the Lions, winning on the road has not been an easy task. Penn State is 0-9 away from the Bryce Jordan Center this season and Penn State sophomore forward Jamelle Cornley said Indiana's Assembly Hall isn't an easy place to play. Case in point, the Lions have never won in 13 games in Bloomington.

But Cornley added that using the confidence gained from the Lions' first victory in 56 days is the key to stealing a win in the Hoosiers' gym.

"We have to go to Indiana, which is a very good team and will be probably a hostile environment, especially with it being Senior Night and all," Cornley said. "So we just have to go ahead and take this [Iowa] game around with it. We have just got to be able to stay focused and maintain our energy and win the next game."

Playing with passion from the opening tip-off has been a problem for Penn State all season. But against Iowa, the Lions sprinted out to an early 11-0 lead. Jackson said getting on top early at home was the key to beating Iowa.

In preparing for their final regular season game, the Lions have the luxury of relaxing, now that the pressure of their 13-game losing streak is gone. Penn State coach Ed DeChellis said even something as simple as the expressions on his players' faces can make the doldrums of practice more tolerable.

"The kids feel good, but we're going to prepare like we would if we didn't win," DeChellis said. "We've got to go play Indiana, but it's a little easier and it's nice to see the guys with smiles on their faces."

But while practicing and flying halfway across the country may be easier now that the Lions have finally captured a win, DeChellis doesn't want his players to get complacent. After all, he said, one win is not supposed to be cause for celebration and parties.

He wants his team to take the good feeling from the Iowa post-game locker room and use it as motivation to get another win before the postseason begins.

"We won a game, and it's really important, believe me, but we've got to move on," DeChellis said. "Let's get ready to go and get the next win. We won a game, but we were supposed to win games [this entire season]."
