The Collegian's editorial regarding the dissolution of the Undergraduate Student Government (USG) is cause for several clarifications ("USG dissolution raises several concerns," Feb. 28). The editorial adds unsubstantiated credibility to the recently dissolved USG, while raising illegitimate concerns about the new student voice, the University Park Undergraduate Association. While USG retroactively boasts of their accomplishments in student advocacy, we must recall the reality of their recent tenure. Rather than being a strong voice of student interests, the group was rendered ineffectual and stagnant by internal rifts. As an effect of this infighting, the USG lost sight of the needs of its constituency: the Penn State student body. For these reasons, USG ceded the respect of the student body and the attention of the administration.
In response, the students of University Park voted to create a new voice for their concerns, the UPUA. Propelled with this popular mandate, the UPUA was recognized as the official voice of the Penn State student on Oct. 15. Since this time, the UPUA has taken great strides to fight for the causes of all University Park undergraduates. Contrary to the editors' statement, the bylaws have been working effectively for months. Furthermore, the UPUA has formed a working relationship with the administration. In this relationship, the administration actively listens (and acts upon) the concerns of Penn State students. For all of these reasons, the editors of The Daily Collegian should begin to recognize the benefits of the new student voice, the UPUA.
