Letter to the Editor
Better examples needed to explain students' class

This letter is in response to the column "Penn State students need to show class" (March 1). It is refreshing to finally see someone say something nice about our generation and our school. I did my undergraduate here at Penn State, and too often we are told that our manners/work-ethic/etc., are far worse than those of previous generations. As Ms. O'Malley pointed out, numerous examples of the finest in human behavior can be found every day here at Penn State (ever heard of Thon?). It may be worth noting, however, that several examples listed in her column may not be representative of the individual's true behavior.

I doubt anyone will deny the fact that an attractive woman gets treated far differently than others. I try to be chivalrous, but I won't deny that I am more likely to hold a door for an attractive girl. If Ms. O'Malley were to spill water on me in the lunch line, I would laugh it off as well. However, if a man were to spill water on me, it is likely that there would be an intense conversation relating to his dexterity and what he needed to do to avoid repercussions. While I do not disagree with anything said in Ms. O'Malley's column, in the future, better examples than things men do for a pretty girl may be more appropriate for convincing people that Penn State 'kids' aren't all bad.
