Asian Light 2007 dances for Christ

Collegian Staff Writer

Hula dancers and hip-hop dancers took to the stage last night in HUB Alumni Hall to worship in the spotlight during Asian Light 2007.

During the event, there were several performances by members of the Asian American Christian Fellowship and a variety of other Asian student groups including a choreographed hula dance.

Peter Ong, a minister and the guest speaker of the evening, discussed Asian stereotypes as well as Christian stereotypes during the program.

"We live in a culture where race matters," Peter Ong said. "We can't pretend by saying 'we are the world.' "Ong said that even Christians have stereotypes and that people should face them.

"As Christians, we've done a poor job at telling people you're part of a bigger story," Ong said. "Bigger than Penn State."

There were comedic skits that also addressed these stereotypes.

David Hur, a member of the Korean Student Fellowship for Christ and a hip-hop dancer performer, said the mix of hip-hop and Christian worship draws in the audience.

"I think it's really great because we can bring in people who are not traditionally Christian," Hur said.

Hur said that through the use of hip-hop dance his group was able to attract more people to KSFC.

"The majority of people in our dance group were not Christian first," he said.

Eunice Chen, Asian Light 2007 event coordinator, said she hoped people would walk away from the program thinking about how to break through the typical way of thinking about Asians and Christians.

"We hope to show a little bit of Jesus through the performances," Chen said. "And who he is to us."
