SpeakOUT uses shameful tactics to voice message

I was appalled when I saw the caption to a photo on the front page of Monday's Daily Collegian. The photo showed members of SpeakOUT protesting at the Lady Lion's last regular season home game.

Contrary to the caption, SpeakOUT was protesting Rene Portland, not just supporting LGBT athletes. This was made known when they held up signs saying "Rene Portland is a bigot," a fact that the blurry picture failed to show. If they were in fact supporting LGBT athletes, then why did theyonly attend the Lady Lion's game? That same weekend was host to a men's home basketball game as well as a men's and women's double gymnastics meet against Ohio State. Where was SpeakOUT at those events?

In the past, they have verbally attacked members of the pep band's sousaphone section, who held up "We support Rene" towels. If all the slanderous protesting wasn't enough on Sunday, at the end of the game, while the pep band played the Alma Mater, SpeakOUT used their flag to cover a banner with the names "Amanda" and "Charity" (the two Lady Lion seniors) on it. SpeakOUT, your tactics are disrespectful and foster hatred of your organization instead of support for your cause. You really need to grow up.
