First Thursday to showcase local artist

Collegian Staff Writer

It's that time of the month again -- First Thursday is showcasing some returning and some new participants in this celebration of the arts.

First Thursday is a monthly event designed to stimulate cultural, intellectual and entertainment talent in the Centre Region.

The Artisan Connection, a big participant last month, will again be holding an artist reception and exhibit. This month's featured artist is local artist Alice Kelsey, who will hold a reception at Artisan Connection tonight from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

"I would be happy to speak informally to anybody interested on any aspect of art. Many like to know how to work out on location. Also pastels is another big question. But I'd love to talk and answer any questions," Kelsey said.

Kelsey specializes in oil and pastel paintings, mainly of landscapes and still-life natural objects. She said she loves the closeness she feels to nature.

"My landscape art reflects on my rural roots growing up in Chester County. I was outside all the time, and I became attuned to landscapes," Kelsey said. "I'm always looking for the natural cycle in nature and the land and also for the abstract qualities like the spiritual. That's what inspires me."

Kerianne Inglima (junior-English), intern at the Artisan Connection, said she realizes many students find it hard to be interested in the arts, but she said regardless of background, attendees can find something interesting in her work.

"Even if you're from suburban or urban areas, you will get a feeling of natural landscapes of Pennsylvania," Inglima said. "Alice Kelsey's work is unique in that it's abstract but has a clear message of what nature should look like. Her artwork has inspired me to appreciate and want to draw more landscapes."

But artwork isn't the only thing First Thursday offers to the public. According to coordinator Katie O'Toole, one of the most popular events this month will be the Celtic band Callanish.

Callanish is a Central Pennsylvania-based band specializing in traditional Irish and Scottish music. Its repertoire includes jigs, reels, airs and upbeat songs from Ireland, Scotland and elsewhere in the British Isles. The band will be performing from 7:30 to 8:30 tonight at Schlow Auditorium.

"One of the biggest attractions is the five-piece band Callanish, which plays traditional Irish and Scottish music. They have a very big regional following, and this is a great opportunity to see them right here in town and for no cost of admission," O'Toole said.

There will also be a number of events held at the Palmer Museum of Art, the HUB-Robeson Galleries and the School of Music. As always, the event is free to everyone.

"It's a vibrant show during a drawn out winter. If you're ready for a break from this winter, then this is a bright and warm show for you," Kelsey said.
