East Stroudsburg pulled out all the stops last night, but in the end even its raucous crowd wasn't enough to end Penn State's winning streak, which now stands at eight.
In front of a packed Koehler Field House, the No. 6 Penn State men's volleyball team continued its recent EIVA dominance, defeating East Stroudsburg 3-0 (30-18, 30-21, 30-24).
The Lions (9-2, 5-0 EIVA) came away with their second road victory in four days with the win, but did so while withstanding an all-out effort from the Warriors.
"I thought [East Stroudsburg] played really hard," Penn State head coach Mark Pavlik said. "They went after everything. They were a very fun team to watch."
Leading Penn State offensively was outside hitter Matt Anderson, who contributed 17 kills, two blocks and three service aces in the winning effort.
Other notable performances last night came from middle hitters Max Holt and Max Lipsitz, who both posted 10 kills. Outside hitter Alex Gutor, who entered the match as Penn State's leader in kills-per-game, contributed seven.
Of interest though are the respective ages of Penn State's three leading scorers on the night. Both Anderson and Holt are sophomores, and Lipsitz is a freshman.
"The sophomores and freshman are continuing to improve," Pavlik said. "They're continuing their development."
While both Anderson and Holt were expected to contribute heavily to this team when the season started, the expectations placed upon Lipsitz were smaller considering he received the starting nod as Penn State's second middle hitter primarily because of a lack of depth at the position.
Over the last several matches, Lipsitz has shown considerable improvement and with Anderson and Holt now forms an impressive trifecta of underclassmen for the Lions.
"It's fun to see them play well," Pavlik said, "and to know they'll be around for awhile."
At the end of the night -- and after strong performances by Penn State's young trio -- Penn State came away with the win, and did so in similar fashion to Friday's win over Princeton.
"All in all, it was the same effort as we had against Princeton," Penn State head coach Mark Pavlik said. "It was a pretty workman-like performance."
Notes:
With the win Penn State improved to 46-5 all-time against East Stroudsburg.
The Lions have this week off before facing Rutgers-Newark and Mercyhurst next Thursday and Friday at Rec Hall.
