NEWS

Despite criticism, a Middlebury College professor maintains that his idea for a "drinking license" for underagers would help to combat dangerous drinking.

For some Muslim women, going to the pool or beach used to be difficult because of Islam's traditional emphasis on modest dress -- but no longer.

A flashing strobe light illuminated dancers swinging their arms in beat to traditional Bhangra music Saturday night.

The University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA) continued working toward having spring elections by passing an election code at its meeting last night.

To avoid accumulating points from the borough and possible eviction, some Penn State fraternities say they have regular maintenance consultants inspect their houses.

The Undergraduate Student Government voted to dissolve and merge with the University Park Undergraduate Association Saturday, consolidating the student voice and ending a debate between student leaders over the future of student government.

Local landlord Rodney Hendricks could be fined up to $20,000 if convicted of borough code violations in connection with a November fire at the Marvin Gardens apartment complex.

When R.E.M. lead singer Michael Stipe was just a lowly art student at the University of Georgia in 1980, the college town of Athens, Ga., had yet to emerge as a thriving music town.

A local graffiti artist and business owner moved forward with his idea for a legal local graffiti space at Friday's State College Borough Council work session, where he pitched the plan to the council.

Nearly 60 members of Delta Sigma Phi fraternity hung out at an event last night drinking pitchers of iced tea and water -- not pitchers of beer.

News in Brief

SPORTS

Four Penn State men's lacrosse defenders stood, huddled together, a few yards in front of their net.

A trip to California at the end of February wasn't as pleasant as the Penn State softball team would have hoped.

It didn't come easily, but for one last time yesterday, the Penn State women's basketball team could boast that it protected the Bryce Jordan Center.

With 43.7 seconds remaining in yesterday's women's basketball game, Charity Renfro and Amanda Brown locked eyes through the tears. The two shared the moment -- their last on the Bryce Jordan Center's court -- before a pair of free throws, standing across the lane from each other.

Saturday's Penn State men's basketball game against Illinois epitomized the Nittany Lions' past two months. Like most games this conference season, it was 40 minutes filled with mindless mistakes, missed opportunities and no breaks for the Lions.

Modest Mouse's "Float On" piped through the speakers at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion while the No. 1 Penn State ACHA Division I Icers unceremoniously skated off.

In case any of the Penn State Icers weren't aware of Friday night's momentous occasion, goaltender Chris Matteo, the only departing senior on the ACHA's No. 1 team, decided to give them a friendly reminder before their game began.

The No. 13 Penn State women's track and field team performed as it was expected this weekend at the Big Ten Championships in Champaign, Ill.

For the Penn State men's track and field team, the Big Ten championships in Bloomington, Ind. this past weekend was like one big relay event.

Heading into this weekend with a six match-winning streak and the top position in the EIVA on the line, the No. 5 Penn State men's volleyball team had a lot riding on its shoulders -- but the Nittany Lions didn't seem worried.

A sign reading "The Chief is Dead" was held in the hands of a Nittwit, and no opposition was in sight.

With assistant coach Jim Mathias roaming the sidelines, the Lady Ruggers took to the pitch Saturday night and defeated Pitt, 20-5.

Good teams have the ability to feed off the enthusiasm and energy of the crowd and convert it into results on the floor. In the world of men's gymnastics, no team may do it better than No. 2 Penn State.

The Delaware women's lacrosse team arrived at Holuba Hall on Saturday hoping to repeat last year's upset win over Penn State. However, the Nittany Lions wouldn't make the same mistake twice as they defeated Delaware, 15-10.

Even with the vibrant crowd, the WPSU cameras and both Penn State and Ohio State men's teams sharing the home turf, the Penn State women's gymnastics team kept focus and showed the lady Buckeyes who is No. 1 in the Big Ten.
