Letter to the Editor
Respect is two-lane road

Zachariah Tomazin seems to have good intentions and I completely agree that bicycle regulations need to be more strictly enforced and cyclists need more education ("Penn State must enforce stricter regulations for bicyclists," Feb. 23).

Having said that, I think he is a bit misguided and doesn't completely understand things from a cyclist's point of view.

If cyclists are to follow the same rules of the road as any motorized vehicle, they should also be entitled to the same rights. Bike lanes are great, but motorists who respect the rights of cyclists are equally (if not more) important.

I can't count the number of times I've been run off the road, cut off or yelled at by motorists who think I have no right to be riding a bike on a road, despite what Pennsylvania law says.

As for Mr. Tomazin's suggested bike facilities, State College has many of these in place already, and they should be commended for it.

Examples include new bike racks downtown, the yellow flashing light for cyclists crossing Park Avenue, the bike lane on either side of Garner Street and many more.

Finally, if Mr. Tomazin thinks we should crack down on cyclists assaulting pedestrians, let's also crack down on motorists assaulting cyclists.

After Thomas Fry allegedly drove over and killed a cyclist, Professor Bohdan Kulakowski, last year, The Daily Collegian reports stated that Mr. Fry was found to be legally blind and had caused another accident in the past year.

Despite all this, there has been no mention of any potential loss of driving privileges for Mr. Fry.

Where is your outrage over that, Mr. Tomazin?
