USG passes resolution to dissolve

Collegian Staff Writer

The Undergraduate Student Government (USG) passed a resolution today to dissolve and merge with the University Park Undergraduate Association (UPUA).

The merger will transfer USG's remaining assets, estimated to be $25,000, according to a USG press release, to UPUA, however, it is contingent upon several conditions.

According to the resolution, UPUA must revise its constitution to make it a, "democratic student government having mechanisms to hold individuals accountable and an autonomous assembly with the freedom to openly debate."

It also requires that UPUA become a member in "shared governance," of the university, and establishes a USG Trust, which will have the power to decide whether or not UPUA has met the requirements. The changes must be made by April 27.

Ralph Crivello, USG senator, said the terms of the merger were intentionally broad.

"They're meant to accommodate UPUA," he said.

Jay Chamberlin, UPUA president, said he had not spoken to anyone from USG about the resolution before the meeting. The decision whether or not to agree to the merger would have to go through a committee, then to the general assembly, he said. UPUA has 21 academic days to respond to the resolution.
