Artist proposes State College graffiti space

Collegian Staff Writer

Simon Hawk, local graffiti artist and owner of JJ by Maxwell, 109 S. Pugh St., spoke to the State College Borough Council today about his proposal for a legal graffiti space in State College.

Hawk explained how a legal space where graffiti artists could practice their artwork in a socially acceptable way would be beneficial to the borough and could help to teach the artists that there is a legal way for them to express themselves.

Hawk also expressed that he would like to address the council in more detail about his proposal at a later date, since his time at during the public forum was limited.

Charles Frye (senior-sculpture) was at the meeting in support of Hawk and said the type of space Hawk is proposing is present in many cities around the country. He added that graffiti artists are well respected around the world, and can make millions of dollars with their artwork.

Council President Cathy Dauler said she would have to discuss with the council manager to determine the best time for Hawk's full proposal.

"I think coming back will be essential," Hawk said.
