Coming off of its first loss of the season, the Penn State men's tennis team made sure not to dwell on the defeat, and attempted to get back to its winning ways. Seconds after Junior Chris Sherman completed his match win over Bucknell's Daniel Bednareck, finishing a clean sweep of the Bison, it was clear that the Nittany Lions had done exactly that.
The Lions defeated the Bison 7-0, moving to 8-1 on the season, including a 1-1 Big Ten record. Head coach Todd Doebler stressed that the team did well, but there were still some things to improve on as the conference season gets underway.
"I think in doubles we have some stuff to work on," Doebler said. "We are trying out some new duos, and while one has the potential to be good, I think we still need to work on our No. 2 and No. 3 teams."
In doubles play, the No. 1 team of sophomore Adam Slagter and junior Michael James continued its success, claiming an 8-3 victory, and moved to No. 19 in the ITA National Doubles Rankings.
Though the Lions' doubles play had been the strong point for most of the season, it was the performances of the singles players that showed just how much effort the team put into the meet.
The Lions took all six singles matches, highlighted by senior Bradley Hunter's win over Bucknell's Jonathan Brenner. Hunter won in two straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. Senior Ryan Berger added another win to his Lions career, posting a two-set win over Bucknell's Ryan Sandburg.
"I think the guys were excited to get back out there and compete," Doebler said. "We came off of a good road trip and played two great teams, and it was good for the players to come out and get a solid win over a solid team."
The Lions will have more than a week to prepare for their next match, which will take place on March 4, when the Hokies of Virginia Tech will come to State College. Doebler knows he must have his team ready physically and mentally if they are going to take down another opponent and continue their successful start.
"I think everyone has specific stuff to work on," he said. "We will try our best to be ready, and hopefully we can come out against Virginia Tech and get another win."
