Letter to the Editor
Dancing affects children

As a member of a greek organization and a pediatric cancer survivor, I would like to settle this ridiculous and disheartening argument once and for all. I can't believe some of the letters written by other students. For those of you who think the greeks use Thon as an excuse to hook up and have another party, you are grossly misinformed. We use Thon to raise money for the kids and their families, probably the same reason you are involved in this great fund raising organization. I don't see why we can not have fun doing it. I am pretty sure that us having fun does not hinder us from raising money for the Thon organization.

Please give me an accurate argument as to why having greek letters and Thon on the same T-shirt hurts anyone or takes away from the kids. The kids' names who are being supported are featured on about 95 percent of these shirts, so this argument is completely falsified right there. You say that we have to much pride in ourselves and are being incredibly self-righteous, so having pride for what you believe in (helping the kids and finding a cure) and having pride or celebrating that you were able to raise over $1.5 million for Thon as greeks is now also a negative aspect and brings down the organization? I don't understand how the people writing these letters can be so disrespectful and so closed-minded as to think these things. I find it extremely offensive that you non-greeks think that "dancing" and staying awake for 48 hours doesn't make a difference for the kids. Well guess what, I was a "kid" and no it doesn't come close to how bad chemotherapy, surgeries and basically living in a hospital can be, but I know for a fact that it puts a smile on these kids' faces knowing that there is someone else besides family and friends who is thinking about them. I wish that when I was sick I had that kind of support, if I knew that thousands of people were out there raising money and doing all these amazing things for my cause it sure would have cheered me up a little bit more. When you lie in a hospital bed for that long every little bit helps, so I think these ridiculous letters belittling greek organizations involvement and pride in Thon need to end right now because it's not about being self-righteous. It's about raising money for a cause, and if some people have fun and take pride in doing it, I don't believe they should be ridiculed any longer.
