It was very refreshing to see somebody have the guts to write about the negative atmosphere Thon can bring. I fully support this fundraiser, and raising more than $5 million for such a great cause is not only a beautiful but also phenomenal thing.
That being said, it is also quite disgusting that many participants use this opportunity to pat themselves on the back.
I've read too many AIM profiles or heard people say "I helped raise this money" or "With my help, we raised this money."
When people ask questions like "I participate in Thon, what do you do to help?" they're putting down those who do not participate.
I thought the whole idea behind Thon was "For the Kids."
I have no doubts that the majority of participants have pure motives for being involved, but there are too many who participate so they can wear the shirts and become the center of attention.
