New winter styles heat up the season

Collegian Staff Writer

Spring Break is just a few weeks away and the newest spring fashions may look tempting, but as the recent snowfall in State College has shown, winter is far from being anywhere near over.

So gather up that extra holiday cash and zip up your puffy winter coat -- here are the must-haves to keep you classy and fabulous for the rest of the cold and snowy Happy Valley winter:

Leggings/Long Shirt Combination

For those of you who thought '80s fashion was just making a revival single, now might be the most economical time to cash in on the look that refuses to leave.

"Hardtail or So Low [leggings] are a staple to any college student's wardrobe," said Amanda Cherkin (sophomore-division of undergraduate studies). Alissa Gubitoso (sophomore-psychology), who works at Metro, 320 E. College Ave., with Cherkin, agreed.

"You can wear them with anything and dress them up or down," Gubitoso said. "They look good on mostly everyone."

Jessalyn Pack (senior-English), an employee of Connections, 130 S. Allen St., also said that when she's working, she mostly sells a lot of really long shirts and leggings because girls still like wearing them.

The Skinny Jeans

Whether or not women possess the legs for the style, the skinny or cigarette jeans govern the winter wardrobe. They can be worn tucked in with UGG boots or with flats for a casual look and dressed up with nice leather boots for a dressier nighttime style.

Teresa Johnson, manager of 5Twenty7, 214 E. College Ave., said her personal indulgence would have to be denim.

"Denim dresses up everything and is always a plus," Johnson said.

Maggie Deihm (sophomore-communication science and disorders), an employee of Access, 224 E. College Ave., said she would splurge on a pair of new skinny jeans with any leftover holiday cash.

"They're in style right now, and they're cute," she said. Deihm said Access has sold many pairs and popular brands included True Religion, Rock & Republic and Paige.

The Belt

Whether worn above the waist or very low on the hips, the belt has notched its way back into a permanent position in the wardrobe.

"Everything was cinched with a belt," said Veronica Burk, manager of Mr. Charles, 228 E. College Ave.

Cherkin said Metro has sold a lot of high-waisted belts as well. With leggings, skinny jeans and belts dominating the closets, Johnson said she felt that these winter trends were bringing back a retro style.

"It's about a structured, basic look," she said.

The Thermal/Zip-Up Vest Combination

Not just for putting under your big ski coat for warmth anymore, the thermal serves as a great fashion staple.

Deihm said Access has sold a lot of thermals, especially Free People, and people accessorize them with a tank top underneath or a zip-up vest over it.

Pack said Connections sold a lot of zip-up vests and Free People thermals as well.

"We sold a lot of zip-up vests to use for inside and outside," she said.

"When it was warmer, people would wear them with thermals under them."
