NEWS

The big snowfall last week gave the Penn State Snowboard Club another reason to celebrate this weekend besides a chance to hit the slopes: the club could host their ninth annual PSU Open.

A judge decided Friday to allow attorneys to file more briefs before ruling if evidence should be suppressed in the case of a Penn State student accused of attacking three women.

Capes were flying and fanny packs were bobbing as some of most daring dancers took a leap of faith -- down the giant slide of strength.

Superheroes, Nickelodeon games and pirates showed up to Thon this weekend -- all part of several theme hours to keep dancers' spirits high.

For 46 hours, 708 dancers stood, feeding off the energy of others and trying to find ways to pass the time -- except most never knew exactly what time it was.

Thousands of people come to Thon every year, but some choose to sacrifice sleep to attend in the wee hours of the morning.

Brightly colored pig hats, massive neon beach balls and tons of Mardi Gras beads all collided to create a lavishly bedecked crowd that pulsated to the music on the floors of the Bryce Jordan Center this weekend.

Dancing for 46 straight hours is a challenge in itself -- but for dancer Jay Thomas, it was practically a miracle.

Before her is a tangle of polychromatic humanity: weary dancers clinging onto each other, rowdy moralers bouncing around with toys and treats and Thon children inspiring all the way.

Sweet memories were formed at the Kids Mail Call Saturday night at Thon.

Mike "The Mailman" Herr danced around the Thon stage as members of the crowd cheered him on, creating a buzz that flooded through the Bryce Jordan Center early Saturday morning.

While dancers passed Thon's 15-hour mark on the floor of the Bryce Jordan Center Saturday morning, Four Diamonds' families spent the time getting to know each other over breakfast.

"It smells," Robby Schweitzer said.

Athlete hour -- where else can kids meet the Geico Gecko, Miss Pennsylvania and members of almost every Penn State sports team?

With less than 12 hours to go, dancers received some welcomed visits from their parents during Thon Dancer Parent Hour.

Thon children "worked it" Saturday morning as they strutted, tossed their hair and were treated like celebrities during the kids' fashion show.

Although Thon ended at 4 p.m. yesterday, there were still a few students that were dancing last night.

HUB Alumni Hall celebrated the year of the pig last night.

A new home, a new length of non-stop standing and now, an unprecedented record-breaking philanthropic total of money raised -- $5,240,385.17, which obliterated last year's record by $1,025,635.99.

There was a hush over the Bryce Jordan Center.

Damage caused by a water main break on Curtin Road by the Pavilion Theater has shut down that section of road for at least three days.

Today marks the celebration of President's Day -- a topic to which Penn State is no stranger.

Throughout the Bryce Jordan Center, dancers began to slink around, holding imaginary guns to the air, eyeing the crowd suspiciously.

Donning bright colors, crazy accessories and a great attitude, moralers have one job -- to keep their dancers positive.

Located at Portal 1 of the Bryce Jordan Center, Stephanie Newcomer protects and watches all happenings outside the main arena. Identified by her bright red shirt, she is a member of the Rules and Regulations Committee.

A small blue-and-gray backpack equipped with a flashing red reflector united a group of Thon 2007 runners.

News in brief

SPORTS [ Updated Monday, Feb. 19, 2007 ]

After a hard-fought weekend at Big Ten Championships in Columbus, Ohio, the Penn State men's swimming and diving team finished in seventh place out of 10 teams with a total of 295 points.

[ Monday, Feb. 19, 2007 ]

A little more than a month after opening its season with a win against Ball State, the No. 5 Penn State men's volleyball team was given the chance to measure its progress this season, as the two teams faced-off again Friday.

It didn't matter to Luke DeLorenzo that the newly crowned No. 1 Penn State ACHA Division I Icers were resting most of their starters. The sophomore forward still expected to win.

For the third and final day of Big Ten championships for men's swimming and diving, Penn State had six players competing in four different events last night to determine who will become the 2007 Big Ten Champion.

Entering Big Ten play, the No. 51 Penn State men's tennis team had yet to have an outcome decided by one match.

When Illinois came to University Park, it marked the second consecutive visit by a highly ranked men's gymnastics team -- but that was where the similarities ended.

Two major scoring runs by No.14 Penn State was too much for No. 11 Cornell to overcome with Penn State coming away with its first victory of the season, winning, 11-6.

The No. 19 Penn State women's gymnastics team can't seem to be stopped.

After facing two nonconference teams this weekend, the Penn State women's tennis team (3-4) finished with two victories against Syracuse and West Virginia.

Unfortunately for the Penn State women's basketball team, its chance to seize a golden opportunity came on the road.

Alando Tucker, Wisconsin's most consistent scoring threat, made his first field goal with less than a minute to go in the first half. Yet, the No. 3 Badgers still enjoyed a double-digit lead.

The No. 11 Penn State wrestling team (14-5, 5-3 Big Ten) entered the state of Michigan Friday looking to continue its momentum for the Big Ten Championships next month and left yesterday confident with two more conference wins over Michigan and Michigan State.

A winless opening weekend was staring the Penn State baseball team down yesterday afternoon against Centenary.

Sitting alone on the bench, still fully dressed in his jersey and pads, redshirt sophomore attacker Max VanArsdale wore an exhausted, dejected expression, perfectly reflecting the postgame mood of the Penn State men's lacrosse team.

ARTS

As one of the most heralded young songwriters of the early '90s grunge movement, Evan Dando and his band, The Lemonheads, had a bright future.

Students looking for a musical treat, compliments of an accomplished 16-piece ensemble, can listen to some colorful jazz music as the Bob Mintzer Big Band performs at the State Theatre tonight at 7:30.
