Women's gymnastics continues winning streak

Collegian Staff Writer

The No. 19 Penn State women's gymnastics team can't seem to be stopped.

The Nittany Lions traveled to University of Michigan Friday night, defeating the No. 9 Wolverines, 195.900-195.525. With the upset victory, the Lions have won five consecutive meets, moving to 2-0 in Big Ten competitions.

The win has the Lions seeing the path to the Big Ten championships opening with each week.

"We are on our way to peaking at the right time," sophomore Katie Perret said. "As long as we stay on track winning against our big ten opponents, it should be a breeze."

Michigan mistakes in the last two rotations helped give the Lions the chance to make a late push toward victory.

"We stayed on beam during our last rotation following a terrific floor rotation," Penn State coach Steve Shephard said. "When Michigan fell on beam, that opened the door."

The overall team score is what decides team rankings, and what indicates a team's performance. However, pulling off an upset victory on the road against a long-time foe seems to sweeten the victory even more.

"Having our team high score in Michigan's Crisler Arena really means a lot to us," senior Stephanie Sullivan said.

After scoring a 195.900, the Lions are now amidst a string of three consecutive meets with a score of 195 or better. Earlier in the season, coaches and gymnasts were disappointed with meet results, feeling they were better than the scores showed.

Now it seems that the squad is pulling things together, and moving in the right direction.

"We stuck our landings, and it seems like people are getting comfortable going after their routines instead of just finishing them," Sullivan said. "I think things are getting tighter as far as our routines are concerned."

Following another strong performance, Shephard still sees room for improvement.

"We just need to focus on the small things now," he said. "I see us scoring in the mid-196 range consistently."

A win such as this one can sometimes propel a team into the remainder of its season with a new sense of confidence, approaching every meet feeling good about each member's abilities.

"We will use it as motivation to keep moving up the rankings," Sullivan said. "The win is a stepping stone for us to keep improving as individuals and as a team."
