Women's lacrosse beats No. 11 Cornell in first scrimmage of season

Collegian Staff Writer

Two major scoring runs by No.14 Penn State was too much for No. 11 Cornell to overcome with Penn State coming away with its first victory of the season, winning, 11-6.

Coming out on the attack against Cornell, the women took an early 4-1 lead behind goals from senior attacker Karen Long and junior midfielder Jessi Lieb.

"Our game plan coming in is always to start strong and come out with a charge, allowing us to set the tone early," Penn State coach Suzanne Isidor said.

However, going into halftime Cornell managed to cut the lead to 5-4 and make the second half one where either team could come away with a victory.

Yet, if Cornell had any plans of coming out in the second half and taking control of the game, those plans were squashed by the Penn State offense.

Again coming out on the attack, Penn State went on a 5-0 scoring run, showing that even though this was a scrimmage, they would not take it lightly.

Throughout the second half, the players also competed with a high level of intensity and team chemistry.

"Communicating with each other and having great team chemistry is one of our biggest strengths coming into this season and it showed in this game," Long said.

After the Penn State run, the game became out of reach for Cornell, and the women's lacrosse team came away with an 11-6 win.

Even with a win of this caliber, the coaches and team still has things to improve on that were apparent during the game.

"This scrimmage showed us that we have to clean up our turnovers and be more accurate with our shooting," Isidor said.

There are also many little things the team feels they need to work on before the beginning of the season.

"We have to make sure and become better at our stick work and our slides," said Long.

With a tough schedule this season, including No. 1 Northwestern, No. 4 North Carolina, No. 6 Princeton, No. 8 Maryland and Delaware, who they play next weekend, it is critical that the team makes these changes now at the beginning of the season.

"Especially against Delaware who is known to be a very strong and aggressive team, we have to come out and play strong team defense," Isidor said.

With this win, Isidor feels this scrimmage allowed the players to become more confident for the upcoming season.

"The players should be confident after a win like this and it should allow them to gain confidence going into the game against Delaware and for the rest of the season," she said.
