Six swimmers to compete in Big Ten finals

Collegian Staff Writer

For the third and final day of Big Ten championships for men's swimming and diving, Penn State had six players competing in four different events last night to determine who will become the 2007 Big Ten Champion.

After the second day of competition, which took place Saturday, the Nittany Lions remained in seventh place with one day of finals left to determine champion. Depending on where the team individually finished that would help them move up in the rankings.

After completing the preliminary round of Big Ten championships to determine Sunday's order for final swimmers yesterday morning, one thing became clear; senior Pat Schrick was hitting his stride at the perfect time.

Schirk swam the fastest preliminary time at Big Ten's for the 200-meter backstroke and automatically qualified as the top seed in yesterday's final with a qualifying time of one minute, 42.37 seconds. Schrik's automatic qualifying time is his second automatic cut of the year and the only two by any Penn State swimmer, the other coming in an automatic time in the 100 backstroke.

Also qualifying to compete last night in the 200 backstroke was freshman Dan Fimbianti who finished with a preliminary time of 1:46.08 and swam in the 'B' final.

Senior Dan Kaiserian and junior Sean Swanepoel both advanced to the 'B' final in the 100 freestyle by swimming at NCAA 'B' qualifying times during preliminary trials.

Also junior Kyle Miranda advanced to the 'B' final of the 200 breaststroke for the second straight year and hoped to gain points for Penn State.

Sophomore Tim Williams, with a time of 1:46.81, was able to claim the last spot in the 'A' finals for the 200 butterfly after finishing eighth in the preliminary round of the Big Ten Championships.

On Saturday night, senior Mike Aldermann finished third in the preliminary round with a score on the three-meter springboard of 353.10, his second-highest score of the year. In the finals Aldermann posted a score of 343.3.
