Doing the dirty work

Collegian Staff Writer

Located at Portal 1 of the Bryce Jordan Center, Stephanie Newcomer protects and watches all happenings outside the main arena. Identified by her bright red shirt, she is a member of the Rules and Regulations Committee.

"We're security," she said. "We kind of keep people under control -- direct them where to go."

Though students like Newcomer rarely get noticed or recognized for their work during the Interfraternity Council/Panhellenic Dance Mara-thon, volunteers who perform odd unnoticed jobs like her are essential to a smoothly operated weekend.

Adam Nygaard, a member of the hospitality committee, which serves food to all the dancers and sells it in the concession stands, is in charge of directing dancers to their meals, 10 total.

To communicate with volunteers and the DJ on stage, Nygaard positioned himself in the back where the hospitality tables are located and waves a big red flag when the hospitality members are ready to feed the hungry dancers.

"I'm signaling to him that there's no line and they can do the next [group of dancers]," Nygaard said as he waved his flag. "It's fun. It gives me something to do."

Many of the odd jobs at Thon belong to members of the OPPerations committee, who mostly take care any kind of physical work they are called on to perform. Donning quirky pig and dragon hats, their navy blue shirts identify them as the volunteers who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty.

The dance floor of Thon was roped off while OPPerations members mopped and cleaned the floor.

George Bragdon, an OPPerations committee member, said some students are called upon to do such tasks as peel stickers off the floor.

"[We are] the custodians of Thon," he explained.

OPPerations committee members do things that include picking up trash, mopping and setting up and tear down equipment.

One of the more appreciated jobs at Thon is completed by morale committee members. They massage the calves and feet of tired, sore dancers.

Each Slide of Strength is a reprise for dancers. OPP members roll out a blue padded mat with "Thon" painted on it. It's sprinkled with baby powder to make it easy for dancers to slide on it. As dancers slide across, student groups give 10-second massages.

Throughout the weekend, committee members were on hand to make the weekend work.

"[We're] kind of like the backbone of Thon," OPP member Michael James said.
