Burst pipe floods Curtin Rd.

Collegian Staff Writer

Damage caused by a water main break on Curtin Road by the Pavilion Theater has shut down that section of road for at least three days.

Guy Woodard, a water services supervisor for Office of the Physical Plant (OPP), said a 10-inch line ruptured under Curtin Road early Saturday afternoon, creating a break in the main and a hole 15 feet deep. He said no one was injured and believes that no buildings have been damaged.

"This is the biggest one I've seen in a while," he said. "We have it isolated ... we're going to be running a new line starting [today], having it in service later in the week."

Several OPP workers said they thought the rupture was caused by "temperature fluctuations."

Craig Hess, a CATA operations supervisor, said bus service would only be slightly affected, with detours onto Park Avenue to bypass the damaged section of road. Temporary bus stops are in place at the greenhouses by the Berkey Creamery and at the intersection of Shortlidge and Curtin Road. Hess also advised riders to board buses at the Music Building and at the Chambers Building.

Parking lots surrounding the closed road are still accessible, according to live.psu.edu.

Hess said the detour did not greatly affect service on Thon weekend, during which CATA offered 24-hour bus service--Thon traffic is "nowhere near" the worst that CATA faces in State College.

"Football Saturdays are our heaviest load," he said.

Woodard said yesterday repairs on the water line will begin this morning, although structural repairs to the road are yet in the planning stage.

"Our engineers are still working on that," he said.
