Dancer Jay Thomas, who attends Penn State Lehigh Valley, hopes dancing 46 hours on a prosthetic leg will inspire Thon kids. He lost his leg four years ago from diabetes and says he sometimes needs a wheelchair when his hips act up. As of hour 42, he said he had yet to use his wheelchair.

Thomas has a prosthetic left leg, but that didn't stop him from representing Penn State Lehigh Valley on the floor at the Bryce Jordan Center this weekend. "It's difficult because you have to manage [having a prosthetic leg] ... there's socks you have to wear. They look like knit caps." When the socks wear down, they need to be changed. Usually Thomas cares for the prosthesis himself, but he told the rest of his team how to help him just in case. "When fatigue sets in, it's a littler harder to put your leg up [to change the sock]," he said. Thomas has had a prosthetic leg for four years. The prosthetic leg is a result of diabetes, which caused some problems with small blood vessels in his foot. He still has hip problems, which constrict him to a wheelchair sometimes. He said he has good days and bad days, and luckily, this weekend has been good. Even during hour 42 of Thon, he was wheelchair-free and doing well. "I have more problems with the good leg than I do with the prosthetic leg sometimes," he said with a smile. In Allentown, he plays wheelchair basketball and tennis. "My intention hopefully is to come up here and play with the school [team]," Thomas said. He says he "can't wait" to transfer to University Park campus next fall. | ||||
