Band offers musical variety

Collegian Staff Writer

Students looking for a musical treat, compliments of an accomplished 16-piece ensemble, can listen to some colorful jazz music as the Bob Mintzer Big Band performs at the State Theatre tonight at 7:30.

The Big Band plays a wide variety of tunes, Bob Mintzer, bandleader and head saxophonist, said.

"The audience will hear a cross section of the band's repertoire on Monday, which ranges from Latin jazz to music, which would be classified as a contemporary spin on the traditional big-band sound," he added.

Mintzer also plans on premiering new songs to add to his Grammy-award-winning catalogue.

"We will also be playing new music that we will record at the culmination of our tour," he said, adding that the 10-day tour is kicking off tonight.

The Bob Mintzer Big Band has been playing together for 24 years and has played concerts all over the world.

The lineup of the band has varied over the years, but the current configuration has been playing together since 1996.

"There are many long-standing relationships within the band," Mintzer said. "We have all worked together in the recording studios of New York City, playing on records, TV music and film music."

Mintzer has been nominated for 13 Grammys, bothwere for his work in the Big Band and with his other projects.

In 2002, the ensemble then won the award for Best Large Jazz Ensemble Album for Homage to Count Basie.

"Being nominated for and winning a Grammy was very gratifying in that it meant that our peers in the music world recognized what we are doing and thought enough of our music to vote for us," Mintzer added.

The band has come to grow extremely close, because of the fact that all 16 members of the band are traveling together while on tour.

"Many of us came up together in New York in the early '70s, jamming and learning how to play," Mintzer said.

The years of playing together are certainly exhibited when the band displays their cohesive sound on stage.

"These musicians are all very experienced, having played in many bands over the years," Mintzer said. "They know how to 'be on the team,' so to speak."
