Women's tennis to face unfamiliar foes

Collegian Staff Writer

The Penn State women's tennis team is facing two unfamiliar foes, Syracuse and West Virginia, at home this weekend at the Penn State Indoor Tennis Center.

The Nittany Lions will be facing Syracuse at 5 p.m. today, and West Virginia at noon tomorrow.

Penn State is coming off of its first win of the spring season against Temple, a 4-3 victory last Saturday. The Lions are also coming off of a tough 4-3 loss at Princeton last Sunday, in which they won just one doubles match.

"I'd like to see us step up in doubles," Penn State coach Buffy Baker said. "That's an area we're expecting a lot more out of."

Though the doubles teams struggled against Princeton, Baker is confident in the way her singles players fared against the tough Princeton squad. She believes the singles matches will be a strongpoint in this weekend's games.

"I think coming off of singles from last weekend, we'll be fine," Baker said.

Penn State has little to no history against their upcoming opponents. They haven't played West Virginia in about six years, and they have never faced Syracuse.

Last weekend, West Virginia won a 7-0 blowout over Youngstown State. They were out-matched by Marshall, losing 6-1.

Syracuse is heading into State College after a tight 4-3 loss to Buffalo last Friday.

Baker feels that Penn State will match up well against the two schools.

"They are good non-conference opponents for where we are right now this season," she said.
