Women seeking revenge against Michigan on the road

Collegian Staff Writer

After Michigan upset the Penn State women's gymnastics team on its home turf last year, Penn State is looking for redemption.

No. 19 Penn State will compete against Big Ten rival No. 9 Michigan today in Ann Arbor. After doing well two weeks ago in West Virginia, Penn State hope its away meet luck will continue.

"The home meet last year was pretty close, but I think we made some mistakes, which cost us the win," Penn State coach Steve Shephard said. "We had a great week of practice, and I'm feeling really good about the team and going up to Ann Arbor."

In 2006, the Wolverines defeated Penn State 194.825-194.400 and took three titles, plus the all-around. Although the Lions scored ahead of Michigan in Big Tens last year, they are still seeking revenge in the dual meet.

"We're ready to show them that Big Tens is ours this year and hopefully we'll scare them a little in their house," co-captain Corissa Pirkl said. "It's always cut-throat with them but I feel like we've been preparing for this meet, and we're a lot more mentally prepared than we have been in the past. The team is really pumped up."

Since this is Pirkl's second meet back after an ankle injury, she is a lot more relaxed and confident than she was at the meet against Pittsburgh. She said she is hoping that all her returning jitters are out after last weekend's performance on the bars in order to progress on her road to recovery.

Along with freshman Alexandra Brockway, Pirkl stopped in the middle of her bar routine, causing her score to be lower than scores in the past. Penn State scored a 48.225 overall in the uneven bars, the lowest score they achieved all season.

"Last weekend we did well but we were a little shaky on the bars," freshman Lindsey Montross said. "It's going to be tough, but we're going to have to take a step forward this weekend.

Although this is her first meet against the Wolverines, Montross is confident in herself and her team. She shared her first collegiate title on the uneven bars last weekend with Katie Perret and is hoping to continue to improve in the event.

"I feel pretty confident, but I'm a little nervous since it's away. We've been hitting routines all week, and I've been pretty solid so I think we're going to do well this weekend."

Shephard has faith that his team will work hard to take home the Big-Ten rivalry crown. However, he believes that some things are more important than the actual number results.

"I'm hoping for a mistake-free meet. As long as long we don't make any mistakes, I'm OK with whatever the outcome is," Shephard said.
