Letter to the Editor
Collegian did not evaluate all aspects of GSA's plan

I felt I needed to write in to address some misleading information in the editorial concerning the GSA's drive for free bus passes ("GSA's bus plan not a feasible option," Feb. 15). First, the editorial strongly implies that that the bus pass will be just for graduate students. The free bus pass will apply to all students, including undergraduates. Second, the editorial states that only 87 percent of the student population (the undergrads) would pay for the pass through the activity fee. Evidently the writer is not aware all students pay the activity fee, including grad students.

The editorial then suggests grad students should live closer to campus or select an apartment with a bus pass. Unfortunately, not all students (including undergraduates) can live close to campus as there are just not enough available apartments. Also, not all apartments offer a bus pass. Those that do increase rent or charge an activity fee to cover the bus pass. Free bus passes may serve to reduce rent (or other associated fees). The editorial then suggests that GSA should charge a membership fee. The GSA is the graduate government body, not a club. Should the UPUA charge all undergrads for representation?

Please remember this is a proposal and is not set in stone. Interest studies should be conducted.

The $35 semester increase for the pass works out to the equivalent of 14 round trips a semester to the mall, Wal-mart or Target.

If a student wouldn't use the bus that many times, they should definitely have the choice to opt out.
