Local stores confirmed that they have pulled now-recalled jars of Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter off their shelves yesterday after a national salmonella outbreak was reported by the Associated Press.

Tammy Seamans, a manager at Weis Market, 1471 Martin St., said that before the store opened yesterday, it pulled all jars with the code 2111 -- the code of the affected jars, according to the Associated Press.

"At this point we're pretty wiped out of Peter Pan," Seamans added. "I don't expect anyone to want to buy Peter Pan at this point anyway."

The Federal Drug Administration released a warning to consumers Wednesday, and ConAgra Foods, the company that manufactures both brands at a facility in Georgia.

ConAgra Foods has announced a recall and is destroying all affected products in their possession, according to an Associated Press article.

Wal-Mart Supercenter, 1665 N. Atherton St., has also complied with the recall.

"The instant they got word of it, they were taking [the peanut butter] off the shelves," said Barry Gill, who is an employee that is working in the store's grocery department.

No one from the local Wegmans Food Markets, 345 Colonnade Blvd., was available for comment as of press time.

Beth Collitt of University Health Services said their lab has not yet seen any cases of salmonella poisoning.

Gail Ritchey, a State College resident, said she became very sick Tuesday after eating a snack of peanut butter and celery.

When Ritchey heard about the outbreak, she said that she found the product code 2111 on her jar of peanut butter, which she said she bought at a State College supermarket.

Ritchey added that she has seven jars on her shelves bearing the suspect numerical code on the jar lids.

"I've been eating it all month," said Ritchey, who has not been formally diagnosed.

According to the Food and Drug Administration, signs of salmonella include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps.

They urge anyone with any of these symptoms who has recently eaten Peter Pan or Great Value peanut butter to contact their doctor or health care provider immediately.
