Today, better known in some circles as "That's What She Said" Day, should be arousing.
That's what she said.
If you're not familiar with the holiday, UrbanDictionary.com defines it as "a response used to turn a simple comment into a sexual joke."
John Hughes, 19, a student at Central Washington University created the event on Facebook.com in mid-January and since then 144,773 people have pledged to join the festivities. Hughes said a daylong tirade in making every sentence uttered on campuses across the country into a sexual innuendo is something college students just can't pass up.
"I strategically placed it on this day because I figured not everyone gets into Valentine's that much but everyone enjoys a good 'that's what she said' joke," Hughes said.
The event is even 'international' because the Facebook page has the joke translated into more than 70 different languages so the whole world can get their mouth around it.
That's what she said.
"I first heard about the saying sometime during high school, and then a few weeks ago I got invited to the Facebook group, I immediately joined," said Shayne Brown (freshman-architectural engineering).
So where does this phenomenon get its start? A quick Google search will pull up many results for Steve Carell's Golden Globe winning role as Michael Scott on NBC's The Office. That's because a mainstay in Scott's innocent but irreverent comedic repertoire is the "that's what she said" joke.
"I'd be lying if I said The Office didn't have a big part to do with it. Seems everyone watches the show and this event kind of grew from there," Hughes said.
So the most innocent people giggle with delight over the opportunity to turn the everyday into a sex joke?
"It's because it's just a little immature and kind of goofy but it's almost clean sexual humor," Hughes said. "It's dirty without being dirty."
That's what she said.
So tomorrow, whether you're eavesdropping on someone's Valentine's Day horror story or hear someone ask for a sausage with everything on it at Herwig's, make sure you choose your 'she saids' wisely.
