Classes canceled, services on schedule

Collegian Staff Writer

While classes have been canceled for today, other Penn State campus services are still running.

The dining halls are open as scheduled.

"We were open at 7 this morning for breakfast," said Lisa Wandel, associate director of food services. "We're essential… no matter what, we'll always be open." Wandel added that, should road conditions be too dangerous for food staff to drive home, the university will offer them overnight housing.

Students looking to work out are still able to use university fitness facilities, which are operating under their normal hours.

"Right now the only thing closing early is the pool, at 5[p.m.]," Joseph Donald, facilities and events coordinator for the White Building, said. He added that any future changes in operating hours will be indicated on their Web site, http://www.psu.edu/dept/whitebldg.

Jennifer Lee, an event assistant for the IM building, said all intramural sports originally planned for tonight, including basketball, coed volleyball, and racquetball, are also still scheduled.

"Our building is currently open," she said. "The intramural sports for this evening are on, unless the university makes the decision to cancel activities after 5 p.m." Mike Herr of the University Park Post Office said that the delivery of campus mail is "pretty much on schedule."

"Not a lot of people came in today," he said. "But the mail trucks are taking what we do have out. 'Neither rain, nor sleet, nor gloom of night,'" he added, echoing the old Post Office slogan. "That's my motto."

Penn State's libraries are closed until 5 p.m., according to their Web site. Christine Avery, head of university college libraries, said the library staff is considered "non-essential personnel."

"We're not in the same class as the dining hall employees," she said. On campus, the midnight clear in effect last night has been set again for tonight, meaning that parking will be restricted in faculty/staff lots from midnight to 7 a.m., according to public information.

In the borough,Public Works Director Mark Whitfield said cars left on the street are subject to towing. He also said the plowing process began at 11 a.m. yesterday and will probably continue until mid-afternoon today.

The Public Works Department will begin to completely remove snow from the downtown streets at midnight tonight, Whitfield said.
