The Lion needs overhaul

Since my freshman year, I've read the Collegian's coverage of the troubles at Penn State's student radio station, The Lion 90.7 FM. It's unfortunate that Penn State funding goes to building the Taj Mahal of glorified Dairy Queens and not to student-run ventures like The Lion. However, I feel there are underlying problems with The Lion -- namely the programming. Anytime 90.7 is on my dial, it seems like there is either recyclable jam band music or canonized classic rock performers that have been played to death for years on any and all other radio stations. I can turn The Lion on in my car, hear part of a song, go into a store, return to my car and listen to the extended jam in the same song. I understand I'm in an extreme minority of students at Penn State in terms of similar music taste, so maybe this rockist attitude is pervasive here. On the other hand, I think the talk programming is necessary and in good taste. I've given The Lion plenty of chances, but maybe I'm just tuning in at the wrong times. The station needs an overhaul if it wants to survive in the iPod era. Recently on The Lion, I heard a sound clip from Homer Simpson saying something to the effect of "no good music being made after 1974." With this kind of attitude, The Lion can look forward to having no FM transmission after 2007.
