After being blanketed by more than five inches of snow yesterday, University Park is observing a two-hour, campus-wide delay today, Penn State spokesman Bill Mahon said as of press time.
This morning's classes and all other campus activities are officially canceled until 10 a.m. Dining halls and other "essential" campus services will be following regularly scheduled hours.
Mahon said the university is encouraging students and faculty to check WPSU-FM radio and the http://www.live.psu.edu Web site throughout the day in case of any further updates.
Mahon said the university will be checking campus conditions to see if an extension of the delay is necessary.
Alexander McGinnis of the Campus Weather Service said he predicted a total accumulation of one to two feet of snow by early afternoon today.
It will be a breezy and cold day, presenting a possibility for blowing and drifting snow, as well as reduced visibility, he said.
The snow has officially put the State College borough in a snow emergency, Public Works Director Mark Whitfield said. Patton and Ferguson Townships have also declared snow emergencies, according to press releases.
Whitfield said since State College is in a snow emergency, "all cars must be removed from borough streets until the snowfall has ceased and the streets have been cleared."
Whitfield said cars left on the street are subject to towing. He also said the plowing process began at 11 a.m. yesterday and will probably continue until mid-afternoon today.
The Public Works Department will begin to completely remove snow from the downtown streets at midnight tonight, Whitfield said.
He also said sidewalks in the borough must be cleared by the property owner -- including downtown businesses -- within 24 hours of when the snowfall stops, or the property owner could face a citation.
Travelers planning to fly out of University Park Airport should check the status of their flights, as the winter storm has caused "significant flight delays and cancellations," according to Delta Connection's Web site, www.delta.com.
The State College Greyhound station has canceled all bus routes for this morning and will provide updates about bus travel as the day progresses.
On campus, the midnight clear in effect last evening has been set again for tonight, meaning that parking will be restricted in faculty/staff lots from midnight to 7 a.m., according to public information.
Yesterday, poor road conditions caused University Park campus mail drivers and couriers to stop deliveries and pick-ups at noon. Today, drivers will follow modified routes.
The Undergraduate Admissions Office has also canceled all campus tours scheduled today including admissions visits.
Today's Penn State Forum lunch is also canceled. The lunch would have featured William Dietz, director of the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity in the Center for Chronic Disease Prevention.
