PSU clubs should operate without monetary concern
After reading the Collegian's article "Lion FM may face difficult journey" (Feb. 9) on the state of The Lion 90.7 FM, I have one question for Dr. Triponey. As vice president for Student Affairs, what makes you think that anyone in your department is qualified to decide whether or not the students at the radio station are spending the money you would allocate them responsibly? Who in Student Affairs has the experience to ascertain whether what a radio station spends money on is or is not necessary? Your job is to make sure that Student Affairs runs properly, not to micromanage individual club expenditures. Dr. Triponey, do you have your employees control how UPUA or UPAC allocate their money as student clubs? No, of course not -- it would be ridiculous. So what makes you think you should have financial control over how the radio station, as a club just like any other, is allowed to spend its money? You are charged with ensuring that clubs like The Lion 90.7 FM are able to function properly within the university system, and you are undeniably failing to fulfill your job in that respect. The negative impact isn't felt just by one student club in the radio station. The entire Penn State student body suffers and expects you to do better. Whether you agree with the student-run nature of the radio station or not, Dr. Triponey, it's your job to make sure the students can do theirs, and not waste their time here begging you for money.
