State College residents want best of both worlds
I have a bit of frustration with the current holiday situation taking place in State College. Every year there is a big fuss over when Halloween should be celebrated due to the mass numbers of drunken college students wandering the streets and the obvious danger that this could pose to the young trick or treaters. This fear is completely warranted, and I have no problem with the movement by the local community to switch the day to make things safer for their children. So when St. Patrick's Day fell within the bounds of spring break, I thought that the community would breathe a sigh of relief and be comforted knowing that the students would be celebrating elsewhere. Much to my surprise, the same group of people who fear for their children's safety (the local community, namely bar and restaurant owners) are moving the drinking fest to a different day so that the students can partake in order to increase yearly revenue. Clearly there are more important things than your children's safety -- bar revenues. So, which is it? Do you want the drunk students' money or do you want a peaceful community? Mike Rowell
