News in Brief

SPORTS

Even with using the Sykes-Sabock Challenge as training for the Big Ten meet in two weeks, the men's track and field team turned in some of the strongest performances of the indoor season on Saturday.

It was neck-and-neck all afternoon as the Penn State women's indoor track team battled Virginia Tech for the top score at the Sykes-Sabock Challenge cup.

As junior Aslynn Satterfield took the floor for the first time all season against Pittsburgh, her brother and the rest of "Aslynn's Army" held up signs and cheered to welcome her back from her wrist injury. Like a true competitor, she picked up right where she left off.

Six representatives of the No. 2 Penn State men's gymnastics team went to Las Vegas for the Winter Cup Challenge with the hopes of cashing in on the opportunity to make the U.S. Men's Senior National Team.

Northwestern's Craig Moore launched a three-pointer from about 30 feet away, with one second left on the shot clock, if Ed DeChellis remembers it correctly.

Coming into the weekend, the Northwestern women's basketball team was winless in all 12 of its conference games. And, not to mention, the Wildcats were in the midst of an 18-game losing streak.

The No. 2 Penn State ACHA Division I Icers approach every game expecting to win, but this weekend, it's hard for them not to feel content with a split against their arch-rival, the No. 3 Ohio Bobcats.

It was the first game of the match, and the No. 7 Penn State men's volleyball team looked to be off to another slow start. Down six points against George Mason Saturday night, the team was in dire need of a spark to jump-start its offense.

During the second period of the Division II Penn State Ice Lions game Saturday night, senior forward Adam Levine had a breakaway that seemed to be just out of reach.

Speed training, an explosive first step, technique and off-season conditioning are a few of the reasons why football players Derrick Williams, Justin King, Devin Fentress and A.J. Wallace would join the track team.

Before last year, Penn State had never sent a 4 x 400 meter relay team to Nationals.

The Penn State men's rugb y team received two surprises Saturday night. First, its opposition, Philadelphia Whitemarsh RFC, did not show up, forcing the team to play an intrasquad scrimmage.

Penn State's men's lacrosse coach Glenn Thiel has a simple philosophy when it comes to preseason games: See how each player looks before the regular season begins, but don't lose anybody to injury.

Coming into this season, it was common knowledge that this year's Penn State men's volleyball team would be drastically different from last year's.

After being cooped up in the Multi-Sport Facility and Holuba Hall for the past few weeks, the Penn State softball team was finally able to get its uniforms dirty and dig into the clay and fresh-cut grass.

Despite missing two key players in sophomore Brendan Lynch and senior co-captain Bradley Hunter, the No. 50 Penn State men's tennis team still managed to enter the Big Ten season undefeated.
