Alumnus believes Spanier should sign sweatshop bill

As an alumnus I want to be proud of my alma mater.

Unfortunately when I read articles like the one about students asking Dr. Spanier to sign the bill that would prevent U.S. companies from profiting from sweatshop labor ("Students request Spanier sign bill," Feb. 1) that pride seemed it go away.

I can only be disgusted at the behavior of Dr. Spanier and his staffers.

Assistant V.P. Daniel Sieminski's statement "Just because we don't sign it doesn't mean we don't support what it stands for," is ludicrous.

Furthermore, the article reports correctly that "around 30 schools have already signed the DSP."

When Dr. Spanier was in Houston recently for an alumni event I spoke with him about signing the DSP.

He insisted that nobody had signed it.

I find Dr. Spanier and his staff's conduct appalling.

The most shocking part of Dr. Spanier's behavior is that he won't even meet with students.

Spanier is putting the university in a bad light in this matter which hurts faculty, students, staff and alumni.
