With some students donning corsets, cloaks and top hats, members of Penn State's Harry Potter club began their Saturday night with a waltz.
In place of a typical formal, members of The Three Broomsticks held its version of the Yule Ball, based on a dance that takes place in the fourth book of the Harry Potter series.
During the ball, the club held its own "Triwizard Tournament," based on the event in the series' fourth book. The tournament began with a champion selection process, in which members from each house -- Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff and Slytherin -- entered their names into a "goblet of fire."
One person was chosen from each house to compete.
The first task in the contest was "Pin the Nose on the Voldemort," during which the contestants were blindfolded and each tried to pin a nose on the arch-nemesis of Harry Potter, Voldemort.
Each champion then had to give a two-minute demonstration to the others as to why they would make the best "Defense Against the Dark Arts" professor.
The Hufflepuff champion, Yovonne Baggott Jones (freshman-meteorology), showed off her knowledge of charms. When asked if she could demonstrate a spell, she waved her hands and said, "Riddikulus," a spell that causes its target to take on a humorous appearance of the spell caster's choosing. Her clever approach prompted laughter from the audience.
Ravenclaw champion John McManigle (junior-physics) was in the lead coming out of the second task. He said he is a new member this year and joined because he had friends in the group.
"I do it for the social aspect," McManigle said. "I've only read the Harry Potter books once, [I'm]quite different from your typical member."
The third task involved the entire club. While the champions waited outside the room, each member hid gold hard-boiled eggs.
The champions' task was to find the "golden snitch," a tiny flying ball used in the books' wizard sport "Quidditch."
When the champions were brought back in they had to find the eggs and bring them to the judges. The champion who found the fourth-to-last egg was declared the winner. After a decent amount of fighting, it was announced that Adam Klein (junior-archaeological science), the Champion of Slytherin, had won.
The club's next event is Red Nose Day, which is based on an event in the United Kingdom that benefits Comic Relief UK, an organization that aims to combat poverty and social injustice. J.K. Rowling has spoken fondly of the charity and has made the organization her main charity effort.
In early April, The Three Broomsticks will organize its very own Red Nose Day, collecting canned goods and money to be donated to Amnesty International. Last year, the club teamed up with the Monty Python Society, performing skits and improv comedy and even held a "Hogwart's Idol."
The event will be held in early April in the Forum.
"We love to have fun here," club President and Head Girl Megan Depew said, "but it's really important to us to give back."
