White's humor hits the spot

Collegian Staff Writer

On Friday night, Grammy-nominated comedian Ron White talked to a packed Bryce Jordan Center about sex, homeland security, sex, the nation's debt, sex, Europe and sex with bears.

Yes, White's show was a sexually stimulated comedy that crossed the line many times and was downright impenitent. And instead of it coming off as immature or contrived, it was actually hilarious.

White walked onstage to tremendous applause and responded by getting on his knees and bowing to the audience. This level of showmanship and respect to the audience was apparent throughout the whole set -- but that's not to say his content was respectful.

White is probably one of the most profane comics I've seen -- losing out only to legends such as Lenny Bruce and sad Bruce imitators such as Andrew Dice Clay. The difference with White is that he isn't trying to shock anyone. You can tell he would have no qualms about walking into his favorite bar and discussing the finer points of copulating with a bear or using sunless tanning lotion as a lubricant.

And, oddly enough, that's what was so great about his show. I didn't get the feeling that I was watching a comedian -- it felt more as if I was just listening to some crazy drunk tell hilarious stories. And smoking and drinking scotch on stage added to that comfortable feeling. White is honest. Nothing is artificial.

Sure, I guess some would turn their noses up at humor that primarily involved sex -- particularly his wife's idea to make semen taste as if it were chocolate.

But White also touched on his family life and even politics. He offered alternative solutions for problems such as homeland security -- get rid of the color-coded "terror-alert system" in place for options of "get a helmet" and "put on the helmet." He also discussed an end to budget crisis -- sell the "rest of Florida" to Israel and buy Mexico, fix it up and sell it to Peru.

White's stand-up routine may seem juvenile and blatantly offensive, but I think it's impossible to go to one of his shows and not laugh. Out of all his blue-collar colleagues, he's the funniest and doesn't rely on worn-out Southern stereotypes for a cheap laugh. If I ever meet him in a bar, I'll make sure to pull up a stool, order some scotch and listen to the man tell some stories.
