Hello out in cyber world. Through the good graces of the arts and online editors here at The Daily Collegian, I have been granted a spot on the web weekly to review what is going on in TV land.
With El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth en English), director Guillermo del Toro (Hellboy) has stirred a buzz in Tinseltown close to that of his friends Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men) and Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu (Babel). The triumvirate of Mexican-born directors has brought a new passion to directing, a passion in which they don't sacrifice their vision for box office numbers.
A more operatic tone will be sounding through the Esber Recital Hall tonight.
I'll admit that when I finished the third (and supposedly final) installment of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, I shed a few tears. Over the years, Bridget, Lena, Tibby and Carmen have grown up alongside me, and I was sad to see them go. I like to think that we have become friends, or perhaps even sisters.
Here's a name you won't want to forget: Annuals. Not 'The' Annuals, mind you, just Annuals.
With the recent success of the film Dreamgirls and the budding musical careers of such arists as John Legend and Corinne Bailey Rae, it would seem as though a soul revival is on the rise. With that in mind, Bettye LaVette is in the middle of a revival of her own, as the '60's soul star continues to release music after more than forty years in the business. LaVette brings her vocal talents to the State Theatre tonight.
It's a new generation Von Trapp family. The Saxe family will invade Eisenhower Auditorium along with the Nittany Valley Symphony at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, presenting the classic musical, Hello, Dolly!
For those bummed about the Darkhorse hogging the good shows, tonight should offer some relief: Chronic Town will host an all-ages Roustabout! show featuring Shade, the Hailing and North.
Irish eyes will be smiling when Altan plays at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at the State Theatre.
New Magnetic Wonder, the new Apples in Stereo album, has a lot going on.
Another World War II movie? I couldn't help but think that every story in every shade and angle possible from D-Day to Pearl Harbor to Guadalcanal has been told not once, but multiple times. But be forewarned: Letters from Iwo Jima is something entirely different from the large repertoire of WWII films.
When directors like Quentin Tarantino or Guy Ritchie come out with their newest popcorn action flicks, the hype surrounding the release has Hollywood abuzz.
Fall Out Boy is not a rock band. Rock music should have an edge, no matter how slight. In their new album Infinity on High, Fall Out Boy's guitars are so soft and processed that their albums should be used as baby bumpers in houses with newborns. The guitar tone on lead single "This Ain't A Scene, It's An Arms Race" sounds wimpier than when the Backstreet Boys tried to rock on "Larger Than Life."
