Student wonders where personal responsibility is
After reading the newspaper this week I'm pretty disgusted at how our society has found ways to blame others for someone's bad judgment. Anthony Torsell's lawyer is claiming that he was "too drunk" to understand his Miranda rights. Well, then what was he doing driving a car? If the statements made that night are suppressed the case will be thrown out. Is this justice? So now if you're too drunk to understand you killed someone, you should be set free? Josephy A. Ventura's lawyer is using the defense that Michael Donahue, the victim, was drunk and Ventura was only acting in self-defense ("Stab wound victim's BAC revealed," Feb. 6). Even if he was acting in self-defense, he allegedly stabbed an unarmed man to death at a bar over a dispute about a girl. How can it be the victim's fault? Why did he have a knife at the bar to begin with? Now the bars are responsible for your drunk driving? Zola could be facing charges of serving a visibly intoxicated Applegate who then allegedly drove her SUV into a freshman ("Zola may face lawsuit for role in alleged DUI," Feb. 7). It's the person's responsibility to determine if they are able to drive or to not drink that much to begin with. We all learned in elementary school to accept the consequences of our actions. Where along the way did we lose that concept? Julie Costantino
