Police are searching for two men who put a gun within inches of a 24-year-old woman's face and pulled the trigger with no apparent motive in her Toftrees Avenue apartment Wednesday night.
The State College woman was in stable condition at the Hershey Medical Center as of 4 p.m. yesterday, Patton Township Police Sgt. Frank Monroe said.
"Last I knew from her medical team late this morning, they were trying to determine the best way to remove the bullet if it could be removed," Monroe said.
It is unclear if she had any other injuries, he added.
Investigating officers have determined the crime was not a "random act," according to a Patton Township police press release. Monroe said there is no clear motive and police have no suspects.
"We think she was deliberately targeted for a specific reason," he said. "Now the stone wall of silence rises up. We don't want to release any more information that could hurt the investigation."
Police said the woman, whose name they would not release, was shot at point-blank range at about 9:30 p.m. Wednesday in her third-floor apartment at 319 Toftrees Ave. Officers found her in the landing area of her apartment complex, Monroe added.
"There are several theories early on, and when you have a crime like this, you look at maybe three or four possible reasons for the crime," he
said. "The detectives are still exploring all the alternatives."
Police also said they don't believe this shooting is related to other burglaries and assaults that have plagued the State College area throughout the last month.
Monroe said the victim was able to tell police that two black men were responsible, but could not provide further description. The men left the area on foot in an unknown direction, Monroe added.
As of press time yesterday, police said they have not located any witness to the crime or anyone who may have seen the men leaving the area.
John Hanratty, 28, lives in the apartment diagonal from the victim. He said he didn't return home until about 11 p.m. Wednesday when he encountered police searching the apartment. He was not allowed back into his apartment for about 45 minutes, he said.
"The police talked to me, asked me if I knew her," he said. "I only knew her to see her."
Hanratty said his landlord called to tell him the shooting was not random, which eased his mind a bit.
"I still feel safe. It's a little bit freaky though," he said. "There's still some dried blood on the stairs."
Police are asking that anyone who has information about the shooting to call the Patton Township Police Department at 234-0273.
