King of tap pounds Eisenhower stage

Collegian Staff Writer

I have never seen a pair of feet as happy as Savion Glover's.

The tap dancing prodigy performed Classical Savion last night at Eisenhower Auditorium, showcasing his own brand of "improvography" to the sounds of classical and jazz musicians. Glover's interaction with these talented musicians is truly captivating, as the beats of his feet harmonize with the songs. He obviously knows the melodies of the music, since his improvisational moves accompany it very well.

It's amazing that such a tiny tap dancer can make so much big noise. It seems as though Glover's feet can never stop moving. Does he tap in his sleep? Does he perform a series of cramp rolls while waiting in line at the bank? Do his feet entertain fellow customers in line at the grocery store? Glover remains full of energy throughout the entire show.

The sound quality was impeccable. The orchestra and Glover's taps were clear and forceful. His taps are sharp, loud and distinct, making it clear that not just anyone can perform improvisation like this. Glover's years of experience shine through each time his taps hit the floor. His smile and personality are a major part of his performance, making it easy to connect to him and appreciate his talent. It is so obvious that he loves what he does, which is so inspiring to be a part of.

The finale was definitely the highlight of the show, with a bright upbeat series of classic American-themed songs. The incredible drumming skills of Jared "Chocolate" Crawford woke the show up just as it was beginning to lose excitement. It was also the first time I have witnessed someone tie their shoe in the middle of a performance. This made me feel relieved, since an untied tap shoe would have made me uneasy if he hadn't fixed it. What I love about this show is that it is entirely original and real, and everything is out in the open, allowing the audience to be a part of Savion Glover's unique magic. This form of art is amazing because there are countless possibilities, and each is brilliant and beautiful in its own way.
