Indie rock sounds influence show

Collegian Staff Writer

For those bummed about the Darkhorse hogging the good shows, tonight should offer some relief: Chronic Town will host an all-ages Roustabout! show featuring Shade, the Hailing and North.

Shade, which has played several past Roustabout! shows, is often described as shoegaze, a mellow rock sound with heavy guitars and low-lying vocals.

If you go:
What:
All-ages Roustabout!
When: Doors open at 9 p.m.
Where: Chronic Town, formerly the Hookah Lounge, 224 W. College Ave.
Details: $5 at the door

But the band members disagree with that categorization.

"We've been pigeonholed by that term a little bit," keyboardist Craig Stuart said.

The band's use of a noisy wall-of-sound approach to guitars, unlike shoegaze, can be very driving and up-tempo instead of dreamy. Still, asking for a better term to describe the music is a challenge.

"That's the hardest question I think you can ask anybody who is trying to create their own sound, because we're not trying to sound like any genre," Stuart said.

The Hailing's guitarist/keyboardist Nick Anderson said the band's feet are "firmly planted in rock and roll," but that its sound encompasses many influences.

"I think a lot of bands start something because they want a certain result, and what you're hearing from us is literally us bleeding music onto tape, without any sort of filter or restriction, for better or worse," he added.

Rounding out the lineup will be local group North.

Lead singer, guitarist and pianist Edward Barton (junior-music) said if there's a regular indie rock scene in State College, it would be Roustabout!.

Barton said the group draws different influences depending on the focus of the songs.
