'Dolly' becomes a family affair

Collegian Staff Writer

It's a new generation Von Trapp family. The Saxe family will invade Eisenhower Auditorium along with the Nittany Valley Symphony at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, presenting the classic musical, Hello, Dolly!

David and Laura Saxe, along with their four children, are starring in the musical.

According to Tere Rill, executive director of the Nittany Valley Symphony, Laura and David Saxe love working together, especially playing opposite each other. They have done this several times in shows such as, Annie Get Your Gun, Carousel and Kiss Me Kate. Yet, they have always dreamed of playing opposite each other in Hello, Dolly!

"It's a family affair," Rill said of the production.

The musical, made famous by Barbra Streisand in the 1969 movie, was also very popular when it opened on Broadway in 1964. It won 10 Tony Awards that year, holding the record for the most won until 2001 with The Producers.

Backing the singing family is a 34-piece orchestra, the local symphony itself.

"This production doesn't change scenery as often as up in New York. But the orchestra will be in the pit and the singers will be on stage," Rill said.

Rill also said this is a rare opportunity that may never come again.

"For the first time, live on stage, all six of the Saxe family are featured in Hello, Dolly! Sons Andy and Danny, daughters Deb and Kaye, and mother and father. Audiences do not see this sort of thing in today's theatre, most acting families do not have this opportunity," Rill said.
