Students must speak out about the lack of buses

The Centre Area Transportation Authority (CATA) system seems to work well. The buses run on a fairly consistent schedule, and during the week they are often filled to capacity. But what happens whenever they are consistently filled?

You hear the all-too-familiar words from the driver: "I'm sorry, this bus is full to capacity. I am shutting the doors now."

This often means long lines of people standing in the cold waiting for another bus to arrive. I thought little of this, accepting that nothing could be done, until a bus driver made a startling statement on my otherwise normal ride today. The driver essentially said that there aren't enough buses to service the number of people who need transportation. The reason, he said, is that no one complains so nothing will ever change. Now, I'm not usually one for any sort of uprising, and I tend to keep my opinions to myself, thinking that one voice cannot make a difference. But as I sat in the warmth of the bus, watching countless people be left behind, I thought that something should be done. When the university decides to remain open, with temperatures below zero and the wind chill well below that, students should not be forced to stand outside waiting for a bus. When the drivers are complaining there are not enough buses to transport students, something needs to be changed.
