Get ready to experience a mix of magic, music and some great moves when the Harlem Globetrotters bring their 'A' game to the Bryce Jordan Center at 3 p.m. Sunday.
While nonchalantly spinning a basketball on his finger, Otis Key, Globetrotter small forward -- at 6 feet 9 inches -- talked about how the team combines great basketball and great entertainment to create a one-of-a-kind show.
"The show is really a little bit of everything. It's a competitive basketball game, a concert, a magic show -- there's just so many different elements to it, and audience participation is really important," Key said.
This will be his fifth time performing at the BJC and his ninth season with the Globetrotters. Key played basketball for Lincoln University in Missouri before becoming a Globetrotter. He also serves as an Advance Ambassador for the team during the tour, making numerous appearances at schools and hospitals across the country.
Every show is different, he said. The performances change depending on the arena and especially the audience.
"Crazy things always happen at our shows, because the audience gets so involved and so excited. We had a streaker in Madison Square Garden one time, and there's always a kid who gets really excited and runs out onto the court. We're pretty much prepared for anything."
The Globetrotters consists of 15 players, who were all at the top of their college basketball teams, according to Key.
"It can get pretty competitive out there between us, especially during practices," he said. "We each have a lot of personal basketball pride; we're the best of the best. But we never forget to have fun."
The Globetrotters have been performing for almost 80 years and have played more than 22,000 games, more than any professional sports team in the world. This will be the Globetrotters ninth time playing at the BJC.
"The Globetrotters are like old friends. It's such a great show for anyone. You go and [you] see children, students, parents and even grandparents all at the same event and all smiling," Bernie Punt, director of public relations for the BJC, said. "There are not many events like this one, and it's not to be missed."
One of the best parts of being a Globetrotter is traveling and making people smile, Key said.
"It's amazing to be able to see all the places you dreamed of seeing as a kid and going to all the places you want to go," he said. "It's great to love what you do, so that just makes every performance a great experience."
Tickets can be purchased online at bjc.psu.edu or at the BJC box office.
