A Penn State student was beaten with metal rods after refusing to give his wallet to three unknown men at about 8:20 p.m. Monday inside a downtown apartment complex, police said.
The suspects, three white males, approached the 20-year-old student inside a building at Meridian Apartments, 747 E. Beaver Ave., according to the State College Police Department. As the victim resisted the demands for his money, two of the three suspects attacked him with metal rods, according to a police press release.
Police said while the victim was being attacked, he attempted to call 911 with his cell phone but one of the suspects smashed the phone with his foot.
The suspects escaped with the victim's coat and wallet, which contained an undisclosed amount of cash and his identification, police said.
The victim's current medical condition was not released by police. According to the press release, police were assisted at the scene by Centre LifeLink EMS.
State College Police Sgt. Chris Fishel said Monday's strong-armed robbery and aggravated assault "does not seem related" to previous robberies in State College apartments. The incident marks the fifth robbery inside a State College apartment building in the last two weeks.
Police have provided descriptions of the three suspects, and the victim was able to complete a composite sketch of the first suspect.
The first suspect is described as an 18- to 22-year-old white male, 5 feet 3 inches to 5 feet 5 inches tall, 165 to 175 pounds, with a stocky build, olive complexion and very short, neatly trimmed hair. He was last seen wearing a yellowish-brown, hooded sweatshirt and climbing the fence at the 600 block of East College Avenue onto the Penn State campus, police said.
The second suspect is described as an 18- to 22-year-old white male, 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet 2 inches tall, 175 pounds with a thin build. He was last seen wearing a navy blue and white horizontally striped, long-sleeved, rugby-style shirt and blue jeans, police said.
The third suspect is described as an 18- to 22-year-old white male, 5 feet 11 inches to 6 feet 2 inches tall, and 180 to 190 pounds.
