Gallery director Kevin Hsieh said there are roughly 67 works of art submitted by 48 School of Visual Arts students because some submitted multiple works. The pieces were either created on their own or as assignments within the school's curriculum. The majority of the works are paintings, photography, sculpture, pottery and new media, Hsieh said. He added that he and the juror who installed the pieces were open to suggestions for the display.

Valerie Smith, chief curator at the Queens Museum, judged the pieces last Monday and decided she wanted to allow every student who submitted something to have it shown. Smith added that there was a limited amount of space, and to accommodate all the students she was forced to eliminate secondary pieces. "When people had put in three pieces I had to pick one or two," she said. "I tried to consciously make it a big open democratic show and celebrate the work."

The winners will be announced at an artist's reception, 5:30 tomorrow night in the Zoller Gallery.

"I wanted to pick people that I thought had a level of professionalism," Smith said. "It has to do with accomplishment -- the level of understanding I felt that they had reached, a kind of maturity in their work."
