Championships mean more than White Out and chants
I was disheartened to see Barry Boretzky's letter, "Fan defends PSU tradition," in Friday's Collegian. I do not believe he read Mr. Flintosh's letter carefully. Mr. Flintosh was not saying anything to disgrace this institution. He was simply stating facts. To say he disgraced Penn State is ridiculous. It's also ridiculous to say he "backed up" Ohio State. Again, he was simply stating a fact. We did not start those things. We may not know who really did, but we certainly did not. I would hope I am not accused of disgracing this university that I love so much, also. I don't tie my support for this university's sports teams to things like a chant or a song, which anyone can use. But no one can use the 1983 Surgar Bowl. No one can use our 2001 Sweet Sixteen appearance or our girls' 1999 volleyball national championship. Those are things that we truly own. We created them. We didn't create the White Out, and we weren't the first to use Zombie Nation. I cheer for the teams, not for a song. And just to clarify, if anyone can take issue to schools using the "We Are" chant, it would be Southern California. "We Are... SC!" was the original, dating back to the 1960s. However, Penn State is easily the most recognized from the "We Are" chant. Christopher Grassi
