The weekend of upsets continued this afternoon for the No. 12 Penn State wrestling team. After defeating No. 10 Northwestern 25-10 on Friday night, the Nittany Lions (12-5, 3-3 Big Ten) shocked No. 6 Iowa 24-13.
The victory was Penn State's first at home against the Hawkeyes since before joining the Big Ten in 1988.
With the meet tied at three, senior Bryan Heller demoralized the Hawkeye squad with a pin over No. 6 Alex Tsirtsis at the 141-pound weight class. The win gave the Lions a 9-3 edge in the team score, a lead they would not lose throughout the rest of the dual.
No. 7 James Yonushonis also came away with a big win over No. 2 Eric Luedke. The grapplers each scored an escape to enter the sudden death overtime, 1-1. 13 seconds in, Yomushonis attacked for the winning takedown to maintain his undefeated record in the Big Ten.
No. 3 Phil Davis and No.13 Aaron Anspach proved themselves once again as one of the most dangerous knockout punches in the country. Davis scored a pin 1:17 into his match at 197, and heavyweight Anspach concluded the meet with a 4-2 decision over No. 6 Matt Fields.
The Lions will have a break next weekend, and will return to action on February 16 at No. 21 Michigan.
