“Nuisance bars” may lose liquor license

Collegian Staff Writer

Local bars Tony's Big Easy, Lulu's Nightspot and Candy Bar and Lounge, 129 S. Pugh St. may have their liquor license revoked, a Liquor Control Board official confirmed today.

The Liquor Control Board (LCB), which reviews all liquor licenses every two years, said there were preliminary objections to the bars' license renewal because each is considered a "nuisance bar."

Sammark Inc. holds the liquor license for the three bars and will contest the plans for license revocation, said Frances O'Brien, the lawyer representing Sammark Inc.

"The LCB will set a date for a hearing at which time they will put on their case and we will put on our case," O'Brien said. He added there is no date set for the hearing.

The next step will be for an administrative hearing officer to prepare a report and submit it to the LCB, at which time they will review the document and vote for or against license renewal at a public board meeting, O'Brien said.

O'Brien confirmed that the nightclubs will remain open under what he called "temporary operating authority" until a decision is made.
